Cloud Hosting for Italy and Romania: Milan, Frankfurt and GDPR

Short answer: For a business serving customers in Italy, host in Milan: it is in the country, close to most Italian users, and inside the EU for GDPR. For a business in Romania, the best choice is an EU data center with good routes to Romania; on OMC Cloud that means Milan or Frankfurt, both about 1,300 to 1,450 km from Bucharest. Whichever you pick, keep personal data in the EU, sign a data processing agreement, and test latency from where your users actually are.
Light in optical fibre travels at roughly 200,000 km per second, so every 1,000 km between user and server adds at least about 10 ms to the round trip. Real routes are longer than a straight line, so actual latency is higher, but the rule shows what matters.
From Milan, the straight-line distance is about 480 km to Rome, 660 km to Naples and 890 km to Palermo, so the physical minimum to most of Italy is under 10 ms. From Bucharest, Milan is about 1,330 km away and Frankfurt about 1,450 km; from Cluj-Napoca both are about 1,100 to 1,200 km, and Timișoara is closer still. For websites, online shops, ERP, remote desktops and most APIs, that is well within what users notice as fast. For latency-critical work such as high-frequency trading or competitive gaming, measure first.
You can test any OMC location yourself before you buy. Each data center has a public speed-test host; Milan is eu-ml-speedtest.omc.cloud and Frankfurt is eu-fr-speedtest.omc.cloud. Run ping from your office or from a server near your customers.
Italy and Romania are both EU members, so GDPR applies to personal data of their residents. The national regulators are the Garante per la protezione dei dati personali in Italy and ANSPDCP in Romania. Hosting in an EU data center keeps the data inside the EU, which removes the need for international transfer mechanisms. OMC Cloud's EU locations are Frankfurt, Amsterdam, London, Madrid, Milan and Stockholm; it is GDPR compliant and offers a Data Processing Agreement on request.
Milan is Italy's main financial and internet hub, and most Italian networks connect there. Hosting in Milan gives Italian users the lowest latency, keeps data in Italy as well as in the EU, and is a strong fit for e-commerce, SaaS, ERP and accounting systems, remote desktops for distributed teams, and AI inference close to Italian users.
OMC Cloud does not have a data center in Romania today. For Romanian companies the practical options are Milan and Frankfurt, which are similar distances from Bucharest; Frankfurt is one of Europe's largest internet exchange points and is well connected to Romanian networks. Many Romanian businesses already run on servers in Germany, the Netherlands or Italy. If you are comparing a local Romanian provider with an EU cloud, compare the full package: certifications, SLA, backup and disaster recovery, support hours, and the price of traffic, not only the monthly server price.
A common setup is to run production in one EU data center and replicate to a second one, for example Milan and Frankfurt. OMC Cloud's disaster recovery service replicates in real time to a geographically separate site with an RTO of up to 30 minutes and near-zero RPO, and daily backups keep 14 restore points in geo-redundant storage.
OMC Cloud runs 25 data centers on four continents, including Milan and Frankfurt. VPS start at $4 a month with NVMe storage and 5,000 GB of monthly traffic included; dedicated NVIDIA GPUs, S3-compatible object storage and disaster recovery are available in the same console. Every plan has a 99.95% uptime SLA and 24/7 human support, and the company is certified ISO/IEC 27001, ISO/IEC 27017 and SOC 2 Type II. You can try it for 30 days with a server worth up to $100, no credit card required: start the free trial, or see all data center locations.
